The Belledonne range dominates the Isère valley, stretching from the river Romanche, to the south, to beyond Allevard. Grand Pic de Belledonne (2980 metres) is the highest summit in the range.
The Grésivaudan valley, at the foot of Belledonne was once the bed of a glacier. It now boasts almost one hundred châteaux.
During the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, Jean-Claude Killy won three gold medals skiing at Chamrousse. A century earlier, Henri Duhamel was one of the first to introduce Alpine skiing in France.
Other resorts, close to Chamrousse, are Collet d'Allevard, 7 Laux, Allevard and Uriage (the last two are hydros).
