A high bastion overlooking Trièves and the Drac, Isère and Drôme valleys, Vercors is the largest of the pre-Alpine massifs.
Several roads run up onto Vercors, from north and south. They are often visually stunning - up to Saint Nizier du Moucherotte, along the gorges of Furon and Bourne and past Les Grands Goulets.

Three distinct areas make up the massif:

  • the eastern edge, with its little villages,
  • the north, around Villard de Lans and Autrans, both Olympic venues in 1968 and now thriving resorts,
  • the southern part, tougher, but also more Mediterranean in character.

Vercors regional natural park extends over 186 000 hectares of land, marking the transition between northern and southern French Alps. The highest peak in the Vercors massif is Le Grand Veymont (2341 metres).
