With 500 companies and more than 38,500 jobs, information and communications technology (ICT) has enjoyed spectacular growth here over the last 15 years, representing one of the largest sectors of activity. Several key framework projects such as Minatec, Alliance Crolles2, Minalogic, make Grenoble-Isère to reach a leading place in France and Europe.

• Microelectronics and nanotechnologies: 21,700 jobs and 3,000 jobs in public research

Informatics and software technologies

This field comprises the activities of systems developers and integrators as well as the SSII and the software developers. With 12,000 jobs in the companies, 2,000 jobs in public research and 2,200 degress/year in higher education, dedicated to informatics and softwares, Grenoble-Isère occupies a first rank place in Europe.

The sector is marked by the presence of well known firms such as HP and Bull, dynamic PMEs, large SSII, such as CapGemini, Atos Origin, ... Ensimag, quoted at the head of the prize lists of applied mathematics and data processing universities, as well as public and private reserach laboratories such as INRIA, Imag, Sun Microsystems, Xerox,...vivify this sector constantly.
