Talented women and men

Grenoble-Isère boasts many talented men and women

Nobel prize for physics

  • Louis Néel (1970 - France), for his discovery of antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic crystal structures explaining distinct phenomena in classical ferromagnetism. He also solved numerous problems in the field of magnetism, such as the theory of Rayleigh's laws, the magnetic properties of fine grains, magnetic viscosity, internal dispersion of fields and superantiferromagnetisme. Néel spent his career in Grenoble, arriving in 1945. He was an influential figure in science, playing a leading role in the inception and subsequent success of Grenoble as a research centre.More info
  • Rudolf Mössbauer (1961 - Germany), for his discovery of recoil-free nuclear radiation, known as the Mössbauer effect. Mössbauer was head of the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) from 1972 to 1977.
  • Klaus von Klitzing (1985 - Germany), for his work on the quantum Halle effect, carried out at the Clarendon Laboratory, in Oxford from 1975 to 1976, and that at the Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory (GHMFL) from 1979 to 1980.

Wolf prize for physics

Philippe Nozières was awarded the Wolf prize for physics (Jerusalem) in 1985. His work focussed on solid-state physics (semiconductors, supraconductors, magnetism), statistical physics (problems with n bodies, thermodynamics and non-linear phenomena, Brownian movement), physics of surfaces and crystal growth, and the hydrodynamics of suspensions. His research work was carried out at ILL. He is a member of France's Academy of Sciences and a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.
